Blow Up

z01Blowup.jpg

Release Date: 1966
Character Played: Bill

This has been a favorite movie for as long as I can remember. And years later, when I really started to notice John Castle more distinctly in TV works, I *clearly* remembered him from this role, small as it was. Bill's little speech about his painting is sublime and then there's the *other* scene... Yeah. I remembered him.

So, for much of my life I've been watching this film and wondered at it's profound meanings - Many of which I couldn't figure out (being a Bear of Little Brain...) I recommend you listen to the commentary track on the DVD - Some things really meant *absolutely nothing*. LOL!

The Prisoner - The General (#1.5)

z02ThePrisoner.jpg

Television Airdate: 11/5/1967
Character Played: Number Twelve

Some quotes regarding John Castle's performance (provided by Amy):

Inside The Prisoner: Radical Television and Film in the 1960s
(Ian Rakoff, 1998)
on page 30, re: "The General":

"Standing out, though, was John Castle as Number 12. His deep, throaty voice had a certain integrity. There was something going on beneath the surface. Number 12 possessed an interior. Castle's performance alone possessed a quality that functioned in tandem with McGoohan's intensity. He carried it off convincingly but his part wasn't big enough to carry the entire episode."

The Official Prisoner Companion
(Matthew White and Jaffer Ali, 1988)
on page 45, re: "The General":

"Number Six found a true conspirator in this episode -- Number Twelve. The two of them joined ranks not to escape, but to prevent The Villagers from being brainwashed and manipulated. Number Twelve is one of the few heroes within The Village--a man in authority who is willing to put his career and possibly his life on the line for a noble cause."

The Lion in Winter

z03LioninWinter.jpg

Release Date: 1968
Character Played: Geoffrey

This is a masterpiece of a film. You must see it in letterbox or don't bother to watch it at all. If you win the lottery, spend every cent on hiring the local megascreen theater to procure a copy and show it on their screen. Bring the whole family - you will feel much better about your relationship after seeing this dysfunction-fest and for a brief, shining moment you will feel that you might, someday, be able to fire your therapist.

My collection of official press kits, photos, and program guides has been growing - Scans of these items can be found on THIS PAGE.

The Promise

z04ThePromise.jpg

Release Date: 1969
Character Played: Marat Yestigneyev

It seems like the worse the quality of tape I have to work with, the more caps I take. Oh, what a lovely, lovely lad is he! John is so lovely in this, he cuts right through the abysmal picture and I lost all perspective of just how bad the tape was. Story-wise, this movie pressed so many of my personal buttons I'm going to declare it my second favorite (Solitary Cyclist has to stay number one.) This movie wouldn't be the one that would win John an Oscar, but it's the one I'll be watching 40 years from now. Three way romance - angsty flare ups - a kiss or two. Makes my teen heart throb!

Worth noting: Sir Ian McKellan has starred in both the stage production and the movie version and has photos and memories of those experiences at his website. His whole website is amazing and he is personally involved - It's not to be missed if you are a fan!

Made

z06Made.jpg

Release Date: 1972
Character Played: Father Dyson

I have to say, I find the topic of this movie a bit BORING. But not because it's a bad movie - I'm just really, really tired of talking about it. John isn't part of the hippie movement that is the focus of the movie - Rather, he's a priest playing the 'devils advocate' (yuk yuk) on what seems to be a movie about how wrong conservative Christian rules of the particular society/time the movie takes place in are and how much better it would be if we broke free and just LOVED. :::sigh::: John's part is really nasty (in a subtle, almost invisible kind of way.) He is an active manipulator and aggressively tries to convert the lead character throughout the movie. He's really icky (but shows some lovely self-doubt in the end.) He's also heart-stopping gorgeous - I can't choose a favorite pic...

A crime has been commited here... This is a musical and John does not sing. I've read many articles that suggests that he *can* sing, but we never actually get to see him do it. Even in a musical. :::grrr:::

Release Date: 1976
Character Played: Damala

Oh, I just love the bad boys! And what woman doesn't fantasize about having John as their "kept man"? but seriously, this is a really prime example of John's talents. He actually does an amazing job of acting the part of a bad actor - his scene on-stage is just awful! That seems like a really hard thing for a good actor to portray in my opinion...

Eliza Fraser

z11_ElizaFraser.jpg

Release Date: 1976
Character Played: Captain Rory McBride

4/07: Caps have been reshot from the DVD - Please save the shiny new versions and throw out the old!

Did you ever do something on film you regretted for the rest of your life? Little did John know when he signed this contract that 30 years later some obsessed fan would post a gazillion pictures of his arse on her website for the world to oogle. Let that be a lesson to you - I know it won't help you sleep at night, John, but you can at least take heart that you brought a little joy into the lives of women (and lets face it, probably some men) everywhere. Except Eliza, of course, who never does say "yes" to John in spite of the following spectacle - go figure.

Some of the caps in this gallery show nudity, so please agree to the following before entering:

I am a legal adult in the country I reside with no medical conditions that would
prevent me from safely viewing the pr0n... erm... ARTISTIC EXPRESSION within.

This movie is a lot of fun and John's screen (and personal) chemistry with Suzanna York are a joy to watch. He's an absolute thing of beauty and I couldn't stop clicking away so there are quite a few caps.

The New Avengers - Dirtier by the Dozen (#1.12)

z13_NewAvengers.jpg

Television Airdate: 1/5/1977
Character Played: Col. 'Mad Jack' Miller

I'm not going to lie to you - I'm about to embark on a squee-fest the likes of which you have never witnessed before. There will be no talk of great acting or clever characterization, NO. Just a whole paragraph about how mind-blowingly beautiful every part of this man is. So if you can't stand to listen to a girl dribbling on about some man's Adonis-like body, move on to the caps or leave. And now...

:::squee squee squee::: OMG I want to lick every part of him, head to foot. Psycho in cammo with big guns. Can you say "yum?" I seriously lost it when he started running his fingers through his hair - and then left it all rumpled. The "someone is gonna get spanked" face (used liberally throughout) has been haunting my dreams. This "unbuttoned" thing is really sexy - and so unlike him! The man is a God - admit it, and we'll move on... Does anyone else find what happens to a wiry, muscular body when it's attached to a powerful, rapidly firing rifle unbearably sexy to watch?

Eagle's Wing

z15_EaglesWing.jpg

Release Date: 1979
Character Played: Priest

As far as the movie goes, I’ll have to watch it again before I call it bad (my opinion often changes with time…) But other than John being too gorgeous for words, I didn’t like it much. I had such hopes - Martin Sheen + Native Americans. I was surprised how un-PC it turned out to be.

Although John has one of the smallest parts, he may very well have the most lines in the movie... Odd, stylized direction with virtually no dialog. John plays another priest - with an Irish accent (not quite as good as the one he does in Vanity Fair, but charming.) I can see why he would have been attracted to the part - on paper it had a lot of potential for what he’s good at (making a rather complicated character out of a few moments on screen.) I suppose, within the context of the production, he succeeded. I know I would have liked to have seen more... I love complicated, “flawed” men. ;-)

Ah, Crazy "Shotgun" Tommy, we hardly knew ye... So few air moments for John and yet he lives forever in CI5 history. What if they hadn't killed him off? I think he would have made an awesome background agent - definitely could have gotten some milage out of this one. Thank goodness for fanfiction!

Note: The caps are from part one only - I don't have a copy of part 12.

John throws a few really good tantrums in this production. I didn't try and screen cap every frame of them as they are much better in motion. Some moments of joy watching him on a fidgety horse. Only episode one was on the disc I was lent but I wouldn't mind seeing the rest of it sometime - I love these period gothic things. Even if this one was a bit lackluster. Added joy: Paul Darrow!

Never Neverland

z20_NeverNeverland.jpg

Release Date: 1980
Character Played: Jim

John barely makes an appearance and the quality of my copy doesn't make it too worth screen capping, but I wanted a representation at the site for those who haven't seen it - This is still a really difficult movie to get a copy of in the US (although I've seen PAL videos on occasion on ebay.) John does some impressive scowling and has a few bursts of outrage worth watching. But the real joy of this movie is that it's a comfort film and I'm sure I will pull it out again on days when life has been hard and I just want a happy ending. I've already watched it several times.

Tales of the Unexpected - Fat Chance (#2.6)

z21_TotUFatChance.jpg

Television Airdate: 4/5/1980
Character Played: John Burge

The end wasn't so unexpected. But hey, it was 25 years ago and I get the impression this show was something of a Night Gallery knock off... Surprising though, because Ronald Dahl is brilliant. John sure looks pretty - lots of snogging. And (oh Lord) a scene where he throws his mistress up against a brick wall in an alley... Can you hear my kink sirens wailing??? I took an unusual amount of "research" photos. Hands, putting on coats, opening cans of beer (looks like he's doing an advert, doesn't it?) I'll buy it, if he's selling. :::giggle:::

Television Airdate: 9/28/1983 and 10/5/1983
Character Played: Count Massino

The Count had my "kink" siren wailing in no time flat. Hedonistic, vicious, tempermental, authoritative, sadistic, and (I'll wager to guess) a bit kinky off screen...? And yet, not without some admirable qualities, or so the other characters comment here and there. He loves his wife - almost as much as he loves tormenting her. <You can psychologically torture me anytime, John.> I think I had a tiny "womanly moment" when he lost his temper in the "red robe scene" - oh my! And, DO NOT miss the glasses at the end!

PASSION ALERT - PASSION ALERT - PASSION ALERT

We get it all in this one... He cries, he becomes enraged, he scowls - a lot. I'll be honest with you though, it was all a bit over my head. I can understand the comedies and romances just fine, but historical Shakespeare is usually out of my range. Twice through and I'm not sure I could give you a summary of what's going on. This part was written for John - he is a joy to watch work, even if I can't understand what he's saying.

You're going to laugh at me when you see that there are over 30 shots which appear to be exactly the same... I promise you they are all different - John Castle's PASSION kicks in and he starts emoting all over the place. I just can't decide which ones are best. Let's face it, I'm biased - this is the role I fell in love with him in and I've studied every frame of this show a thousand times over since the first day it aired. I'll get some use out of all these, even if no one else does.

Seriously BAD hair day... I was quite taken with the whole "serving and drinking of the coffee" as you can see. Lots of lip licking. I don't get the impression they were trying to make his character particularly cold and/or ruthless but it had that feel to me - which I found vaguely interesting. As with the other episode of Tales of the Unexpected, the writing and production values left quite a bit to be desired.

Release Date: 1985

This is a real beauty - Yet another brilliant DVD transfer. I loved this film when I first saw it on full screen VHS - Letterbox DVD was a spiritual experience (no pun intended.) This may be the first time we get a long haired, bearded John when it's actually his real hair (not a wig, extentions, pasted on whiskers, etc.) and it's really spectacular! I think the war braiding might be the sexiest thing I've ever seen. And the blue, blue eyes - don't look directly at them, you'll go blind. John isn't the only stud in this LotR-style Bible epic, Edward Woodward proves that John doesn't have the corner on the silver fox market.

I liked this one *very* much... Gee, couldn't have anything to do with John walking around nekkid through half the show, could it? No, really - It was great for a and old fashioned drawing room murder (Clue-style). I only took a few caps to get the idea of it - As you can see, the hideous quality made a comprehensive collection not worth my time. The few that are there, however, are definitely worth seeing. I'm so looking forward to the day this one comes out on DVD! ;-)

Star's captures are at the end - I left them as she caught things I didn't. John sure looks pretty in this one, but it's a fairly unremarkable performance/role. He used an accent (Hungarian, I think) and it sort of ruins it for me. And, unlike his other roles, this character doesn't have anything particularly remarkable going on. So, definitely worth watching for eye candy, but don't spend a fortune to add it to your movie collection.

Each time I watch this one it gets better... First time through I wasn't about to give the movie high marks but there were a few favorite moments. Next time through I started to appreciate the whole production and was writing down quotes. By the third time, I had convinced myself that this was high art (of the Re-Animator sort) and every moment was precious. Perhaps you will buy a copy on this recommendation and say I'm completely insane. At the very least, there are some very sexy moments during the long opium den scene. It's hard not to respond (in so many ways) to John - high as a kite and hallucinating on opium - reclining passively, furrowed brow sweating so charmingly. I just want to stroke the brow, tell him it will be alright, and then take wicked advantage of him while he's drugged senseless. :::evil:::

Inspector Morse - Who Killed Harry Field? (#5.3)

z31_HarryField.jpg

Television Airdate: 3/13/1991
Character Played: Tony Doyle

I had a memory (of watching this years ago) that this was one of my favorite roles of John's - I'm not sure what drug I was on when I formed this opinion... John has about 5 min. of air time and plays a total sleeze. He's an artist (a bad one) and there is some implied angst - and he's at his most handsome age, so perhaps I created a whole fantasy world out of that. It's more likely I remembered this episode so fondly because it is a favorite and well worth watching - from an Inspector Morse perspective. There are some lovely moments between the two leads and I did not wander from the TV the whole way through even though I have not watched anything else of the Morse stuff and I've seen this one a few times already. Of course, it may simply have been a memory of pictures 45-52 that I was thinking of - OMG.

I really like John in this one but to get to him you have to endure the most horrendous acting I've ever encountered - Little Lord Fauntleroy is simply awful (and his mother isn't a whole lot better.) Some time around the fourth or fifth time I watched this I had a realization - the two actors mentioned were British. They must be. No one can act that badly in their own language - yet, a Brit trying to impersonate an American successfully (or vice versa) is close to impossible. Anyway, John's eyes twinkle a lot (in spite of all the scowling) and I can't take my eyes off him. Watch it without the sound and you'll be fine.

The Ruth Rendell Mysteries - Dark Blue Perfume

z40_DarkBluePerfume.jpg

Television Airdate: 1/10/1996
Character Played: Mark

John's beauty aside, this is stunningly filmed - you might not notice just watching. When I was taking pictures though - frame by frame - I was enthralled with what the director did with light and sweeping camera movements. Really sublime visual artistry - hope he/she got recognition for it. And I really think this is one of the strongest scripts I've watched in a long time - maybe the mystery part would be predictable to some, but the character portrayal/development is top notch. I think this character, and how John acted it, runs very close to Guy in Bramwell in 'best performances' (which is really interesting as it was the same year.) I can't wait for a DVD release - my left thumb for a clear copy!

Watchability of the copy I was lent wasn't bad, but the caps didn't turn out so great. Among the 'failed' group is a seriously sexy John 'the morning after' - rumpled, untucked, frowzy... :::eep::: The best snogging was just too dark and/or blurry to capture - The same is true for the several lick lippings (after the kisses). You will just have to wait for the live performance for the best of it. ;-)

Lots of 'research shots' - hands mostly. Screen cap #114 = a coffee service is roughly bumped aside on a desk so that wild monkey love may be had upon it. :::eep::: Well, ok... maybe they wind up on the floor (judging from the angle they are propelling in the fade out shot.) Use your imagination.

Character Played: Charles Rider/Joseph James Webb

I'm not sure I can fairly review John in this one... It's going to be a sentimental favorite forever and I can't see past my personal attachment to get a fix on his performance. Some of you may know that I went to see John in a play in London October of 2005. Of course, everyone wanted to know what he was like when I got back and I was unable to give a screen example... Until I saw this show, shortly after my return. I'm not sure I can pin down *exactly* what's so different about him here than in other performances or why bells rang for me. Partially, it's how he looks (a lot like he did in person at the performance) - but it's also about his on-screen presence/personality. I don't know... It's just undefinable. But none the less, there he is: John Castle of London, October 2005. :::grin:::

Bramwell III - Episode (#3.4)

z42_Bramwell.jpg

Television Airdate: 5/13/1996
Character Played: Guy le Saux

I was far too absorbed in the story to even notice John much. I don't want to give anything away, as I would recommend this as a must see, but he plays a very difficult character in a very edgy situation. I had watched the other episodes in this series and not enjoyed them much so I was surprised with this exceptional piece of writing. And I'm still working out my feelings toward John's character... Tricky.

The Heart Surgeon

z43_TheHeartSurgeon.jpg

Television Airdate: 1997
Character Played: Charlie Hawkesmore

This was good... Really good. My favorite moments? John in a complete fit of pique - throwing the hissy snit of the year. Other moments include his various expressions of outrage when confronted by his coworker and his moment of integrity when he... I suppose I just gave away too much. Frivolous detail: I absolutely LOVE the shirts he wears in this (he also wears them in Dealers) - those striped things with white cuffs and collars from the 90s. I just think they are the cat's whiskers!

The Thief Takers - Fashion Victims (#3.19)

z44_TheThiefTakers.jpg

Television Airdate: 10/30/1997
Character Played: Pieter Kluivert

I only have the first 8 minutes of this - but it's enough to give us a few "Tommy" moments... He's a cop a little over the top - Not afraid to brutalize a suspect in the heat of the chase. Unfortunately, the Dutch accent cuts down the enjoyability factor a tiny bit. But I can't wait to see the rest of it! More caps to come when I get a complete version.

The Inspector Pitt Mysteries - The Cater Street Hangman

z45_CaterSt.jpg

Television Airdate: 1998
Character Played: Rev. Prebble

John's part is small but he's spectacular! Another "just out of bed" rumpled hair, dressing gown scene. :::sigh::: He plays another minister - lots of PASSION lying about the place... Nice mini performance as he does his sermons, gets interrogated, whips himself... :::erm::: He has an awful reputation - I would have liked to have heard more (or caught whatever detail they may have given that I missed) on this. I didn't find his character particularly appealing (way too Bible-thumping for me to stand for very long) but he certainly had his moments (and what about that reputation...?) I just loved when the sisters were talking about him and one of them exclaims in disgust, "Can you imagine administering wifely duties!?!" Um... Yes, thank you. Trying really hard to imagine that.

Wycliffe - Lands End (#5.6)

z46_Wycliffe.jpg

Television Airdate: 7/5/1998
Character Played: Peter Selby

John plays a pretty little psycho - not sure he really carried it off that well... And playing a brilliant hacker? Hmm... Not so sure. But that's not so say this one isn't enjoyable. He gave it 110% - It actually looks like he's typing at the keyboard (not doing that fake tappity tap thing that always gives away an actor who can't type.)

The Vanishing Man - 6 Episodes

z47_TheVanishingMan.jpg

Television Airdate: 7/18/1998 through 8/22/1998
Character Played: Moreau

John has only had a regular spot on a TV series twice that I know of - This show and Ben Hall. I've never seen Ben Hall, so this is really the only time I've seen John act in a part that had the time and possibilities that you don't get in a one-shot guest appearance. It *did* feel different - And somehow, we get less of the character than some of John's 5-minute appearances... I think if the show had continued on longer than six episodes, this might have been a great part. But we never really got to see the character in it's fullness or get much backstory. Still, a great time was had by all. ;-)

The tapes I was lent included all six episodes made, but not the pilot movie (which John is *not* in.) It's going to take me a while to screen cap all of the episodes and the quality isn't great. Here is episode six (which really had the best screen caps opportunities) to hold everyone over...

z48_NewProfessionals.jpg

Television Airdate: 10/10/1999

The fact that they got John to guest spot on this series is very, very cool. The series? Not so much... But it's a great part for John with a little angsty bite at the end. This one episode is completely watchable.

Poirot - Lord Edgware Dies (#8.2)

z49_LordEdgware.jpg

Television Airdate: 2/19/2000
Character Played: Lord Edgware

Keep in mind the title of this is Lord Edgware Dies - and John Castle plays Lord Edgware. Who is a right total bastard. John throws himself into the part. I think the character is a little over the top in unpleasantness and of course, John plays the part as directed... Making this one of the few performances I don't actually like. The writer and director of this episode would do well to note that subtlety makes a small character large.

Nova - The Holocaust on Trial

z50_Holocaust.jpg

Television Airdate: 10/31/2000
Character Played: David Irving

It was interesting watching John in this production, if you know him well (as we do) it is clear he is suppressing his normal mannerisms and expressions. As he mentions in one of the production articles, he did not try to imitate David Irving, but it seems clear to me that he captured something that was not himself.

A Dinner of Herbs

z51_DinnerofHerbs.jpg

Television Airdate: 11/24/2000
Character Played: Alfred Cottle

Wow. Are there men like this? Has any woman been so lucky? A generous, devoted, loving, happy man - Amazing that our intense, brooding, PASSIONATE John can make it look so convincing. I'll tell you something though - This character didn't really engage me until I was taking the captures. Something about spending some time with him I think. His moments on screen were fleeting and somewhat 2-dimentional. Slow it down and hang out with him, however - watch his face, movements - and the man becomes real.

Gods and Generals

z54_GodsandGenerals.jpg

Release Date: 2003
Character Played: Old Penn

It would take a dozen pages to discuss (and defend) how insulting I thought this movie was, but I have better things to do with my time... I will say, however, that it had one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've heard in years (I watched the title sequence at least 10 times) and the cinematography and set/location design was amazing. And OMG - Imagine my surprise to see David Kincaid and his group performing!

Lots of controversy - lots of outrage - Very touching how devoted he is to his wife. I would have included a shot of John's tummy but, well... Blood - Ick.

Murder City - Under the Skin (#1.2)

z56_MurderCity.jpg

Television Airdate: 3/25/2004
Character Played: Mark Purves

Murder City wasn't the best show ever made but I can totally see why John took the part - must have looked really good on paper. Once again, with about 5 minutes of airtime and a dozen lines John managed to play an unusually interesting character based on practically nothing. I was a little thrown at some odd things - he made an interesting accent choice (which I'm sure is highly significant and I don't have the background on) and I was a little alarmed at his voice - it seems to have changed (beyond whatever the accent was doing to it.) The best part? The WINK! :::squee:::

I love this show. Love, love, love it. So when I heard John was going to guest star on it, I thought I'd die of ecstasy! He did not disappoint. My only complaint? There is reference to some rather disgusting, compromising pictures... Which we tragically *don't* get to see. :-(

The Harlot's Progress

z59_HarlotsProgress.jpg

Television Airdate: 11/2/2006
Character Played: Sir John Gonson

In 1731 the artist William Hogarth produced a graphic series of paintings which lifted the lid on 18th-century vice and established his enduring reputation as a remarkable social satirist and the greatest British artist of his day. This movie brings to life Hogarth's exploration of sex trafficking and debauchery in Georgian London. John only has a line or two but the movie is well worth watching for it's own sake.
